Forward Mike Davies checks in with chicagowolves.com to talk about his offseason and his expectations for the upcoming year.
What have you been up to in the offseason?
The offseason is going well. I have been spending the summer in St. Louis. I have been to a lot of Cardinals games and just relaxing with friends and family. But, I am also training every day. I am anxious to start the season. The offseason has been a little too long for my liking.
What is the difference for you between this offseason and last offseason?
This year is my first offseason that I have not been on campus at the University of Wisconsin taking classes, so it’s been a little bit of a change. I have had to manage my time a little bit better in terms of waking up and going to work out. When I was in college, I would be in class in the morning then go work out and skate. I wouldn’t be finished until late afternoon. Now, I like to get up early and work out and then go skate and have the remainder of the day to rest and recover.
What is your current training regimen?
I have been working on all parts of my game this summer. The biggest thing I have been focusing on is my explosiveness. The best players get to the puck faster and when you do that, you have a better chance at scoring. I have been trying to improve going from standing still to my first few strides and exploding out of those steps.
Assess your rookie season. How do you think it went?
My first year went better than I expected. I exceeded the expectations I set for myself. I started the season in Gwinnett and when I got that first call-up I took advantage of my opportunity and was able to stick. That is what life is about, taking advantage of the opportunities presented to you. Especially in hockey because its your job and you have to fight to keep it every day. You wake up in the morning and don’t want anyone to take your job. I think my stats were good for the amount of playing time I had with the Wolves.
What are you expectations for this season?
My expectations are the exact same as last year: wake up every morning and leave it all on the ice. You never know when it’s going to be your last game. I want to come in and work hard and get to know the new faces in the locker room. So, I am really excited about that.
How ready are you to get back into game action and be done with the offseason?
I have been ready for the season to start for the last month. The past few weeks have gone by so slow. I haven’t played in a true game setting in about five months. I just want to get back after it and play a real live game in front of our great fans. I am excited to get started at training camp next month. It is going to be a fun year.
