Center Jason Krog netted the eventual game-winning goal and became the 79th player in AHL history to record 500 points (167G, 333A). Right wing Joey Crabb led the way for the Wolves with three points (G, 2A), and netminder Peter Mannino (16-3-0) stopped 15 of 16 shots as he picked up his career-best eighth victory in a row. The win moved Chicago (31-17-0-4) into second place in the West Division, just one point behind Rockford, with four games in hand.
Just 19 seconds into the game, center Travis Morin put Texas (29-17-3-4) on the board. Mannino played the puck behind his net and was unable to get back in position before Greg Rallo dished the puck to Morin and shot home the puck into an empty net.
Right wing Anthony Stewart evened the score for Chicago when he redirected a pass from the top of the crease past Stars netminder Scott Ford halfway through the first period. Center Matt Anderson began the play by passing the puck to Crabb, who was standing on the end line and relayed the puck to Stewart to set up the tally.
Krog put the Wolves up 2-1 with three minutes remaining in the second period. Stewart wrapped around the goal, spun around and sent a blind pass through the crease, which Krog was able to pick up and put in the net for the go-ahead goal.
Chicago took a 3-1 lead 39 seconds into the final stanza. Skating up the boards, defenseman Chris Chelios crossed the puck over to Crabb who was streaking down the middle. Crabb redirected the pass and took a shot along the ice, which Anderson got his stick on and tipped into an empty net.
Crabb rounded out the scoring when he stripped the puck away from a Texas defender in front of the Stars net, turned around and roofed a shot over Ford’s shoulder at 3:11 of the third period.
Ford (4-3-1) posted 31 saves in the losing effort.
The Wolves and Stars will battle in a rematch at Cedar Park Center tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
