The game marked the first regulation loss for Chicago (41-19-1-5) on home ice since Dec. 27, a span of 17 home matchups. The 40-save shutout by MacDonald (12-18-3) was the third against the Wolves this season, and the first since Nov. 20.
“They had outstanding goaltending tonight; MacDonald really played well,” said Wolves Head Coach Don Lever. “We didn’t play well the first half of the game. It took us a while to get going, and they came at us and finished us.”
Center Tim Brent broke a scoreless tie, 1:16 into the second period when he sent a wrist shot from high in the zone zinging past Wolves goaltender Drew MacIntyre to give Toronto (26-30-6-5) a 1-0 lead.
The Marlies pulled ahead, 2-0, 2:09 later. Defenseman Brendan Mikkelson started the play out behind his own net, carried the puck down the ice and shipped a pass to left wing Kyle Calder, who crashed the net and shoveled it over the goal line.
Calder bagged his second of the game to give the Marlies a 3-0 lead at 9:12 of the second period. Right wing Greg Scott held the puck to the right of the Wolves net and fired a shot across, which Calder came streaking in and knocked past MacIntyre.
MacIntyre (17-14-2) turned aside 22 of 25 shots he faced for Chicago.
The Wolves hit the ice again Saturday to take on the Houston Aeros at the Allstate Arena at 7 p.m.
