Wolves Drop 2-1 Shootout Decision In Preseason Opener

Chicago held a 1-0 advantage after four rounds in the shootout as right wing Kellan Tochkin scored for the Wolves, but Peoria’s Anthony Peluso and Brett Sonne were able to get the final two attempts past Mathieu Corbeil to seal the win for the Rivermen.

Chicago (0-0-0-1) opened scoring at the 11:36 mark of the opening frame with a power-play goal by defenseman Matt McCready. He took a pass from Tochkin and wristed a shot past Rivermen goaltender Jake Allen.

Allen stopped 12 of 13 shots before being replaced by Paul Karpowich at the start of the third period. Karpowich (1-0-0) kicked out all eight shots he faced and five of six attempts in the shootout.

Peoria (1-0-0-0) tied the score just 1:34 later. Right wing Tyler Shattock won a faceoff and dropped the puck back to the point where defenseman Mark Cundari fired a shot that beat Wolves starting netminder Joe Cannata.

Cannata thwarted 10 of 11 shots in 30:32 of action before giving way to Corbeil. The 21-year-old rookie (0-0-1) stopped 11 shots in 34:28 as well as four of six shootout attempts.
The Wolves continue their preseason slate against the Rockford IceHogs at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at West Meadows Ice Arena in Rolling Meadows.
